Tomatoes are said to be originated from Peru, where their name in Aztec language translated to 'a plump thing with a navel', which is clearly how the fruit looks. They were first introduced in Europe in the 16th century and were of the yellow variety, which is why in Italy it was called pomodoro meaning 'golden apple'. There are about 10,000 varieties of juicy organic tomatoes which are cultivated worldwide and are found in yellow, black, pink, purple or white too.
